How to control or prevent hair splits during summer

Hair loss and split ends are some of the most common hair issues that people experience on a daily basis. With a shift in the lifestyle of today’s youth, a move towards consuming more and more junk food, a chronic lack of the sufficient amount of sleep required by the body and spending a lot of time under the sun as well as the terribly high levels of environmental pollution can make the hair look dull, dry and cause split ends by making the hair brittle.

Weather changes can affect the amount of breakage you have on your hair and can cause it to split more. Drier seasons like summers and winters are especially hard on the hair and can cause it to become dry and split. If you are suffering from split ends, here are some cheap, homemade masks you can use to revitalize your hair.

Tips to control split ends

How to protect hair during summer

  • Every time you wash your hair, make sure you oil it before as it will reduce hair damages at the time of washing.
  • For detangling your hair always use wide tooth comb especially when your hair is wet. Start combing from the ends and then step up towards the root.
  • Hot water showers wash away the essential minerals off your scalp, so it is better you wash your hair with lukewarm water.
  • Get your hair trimmed at regular intervals as that will make sure as soon as your hair starts developing split ends it is chopped off.

Hot oil conditioning

Deep conditioning your hair with hot oils can help to restore moisture to the hair and control split hair.

Heat some olive/coconut/almond/castor oil in a microwave for 20 seconds and massage into your hair and scalp. Leave overnight or at least 45 minutes before shampooing.

Bananas

With their high content of potassium, iron, zinc, natural oils and vitamins A, C and E, bananas can make your hair more elastic and strong; soft and more manageable.

Egg mask

Eggs contain essential fatty acids and proteins, which can help to strengthen the hair follicles and can help make your hair smoother, get rid of tangles and make it stronger.

As disgusting as it sounds, it is one of those hacks that really do work.

Apply half cup of mayonnaise onto towel dried hair, leave on for 15-20 minutes, rinse and shampoo with something that has a potent smell to mask the mayonnaise smell.

Avocado

This is a miracle worker when it comes to hair. With a high content of folic acid, proteins, essential fatty acids, Vitamins A, D and E and magnesium amongst other nutrients, it can help to nourish the hair and boost growth. It can also make it softer and get rid of the roughness of split hair.

Beer

Not just a great party drink, beer can supply protein and sugars to the hair follicles and can control split ends. It adds shine and volume to the hair as well.

Let the beer sit out overnight, pour into spray bottle and spray onto the hair avoiding the roots. Leave it on, the smell will go away once it dries.

Things to remember

Don’t wash your hair daily

Washing your hair daily can lead to the natural oils being stripped off, which can in turn make the hair greasier by forcing the scalp to produce more oils. Wash your hair a couple of times a week for normal-dry hair and three times for oily hair.

Cover the hair

Use a hat or scarf to cover the head to protect it from sun and UV damage. It can also help keep the effects of dust and pollution at bay.

Do not over style your hair

Avoid blow driers and curling irons as much as possible if you have split hair as it can cause further damage and cause the hair to become frayed.
